COMPANY STORE

What is a Company Store?

In the past, the company store was a shop established by an enterprise to supply employees with promotional products. Many larger companies provide an actual store where employees can purchase imprinted merchandise and other products. However, the vast majority of companies that have had such stores in the past are not willing to continue to make the investment in space and personnel to operate the store. Therefore, actual full-time facilities are becoming increasingly rare.

Still, there is a demand by employees for imprinted merchandise. So most companies have been making an effort, in one form or another, to provide other means for employees to purchase imprinted promotional products.

Purpose of a Company Store

A company store can serve several valuable purposes. The most obvious is that it is a convenient way for employees to purchase imprinted merchandise. By maintaining an inventory of selected promotional products, it is possible to permit employees or other users to acquire as few as one of any given item instead of having to order catalog minimum quantities.

This function goes much deeper, however, because it facilitates an employee's desire to "show-off" his or her affiliation with the company. This pride plays a significant role in such factors as loyalty, productivity, morale, longevity and other desirable employee traits. In fact, these benefits tend to occur regardless of how much the employee pays for an item of merchandise. Therefore, the company store can serve an important function in a company's operation by building morale and a feeling of corporate identity and belonging.

Because an efficiently run company store keeps a variety of promotional products on hand, it becomes a resource for all sorts of company activities. Not only is it convenient, it can cut down on last minute rush orders and the necessity to place larger orders than needed. For example, a company store can function as a convenient source for imprinted products for use by the Personnel Department when they carry out various company and employee activities. There are many cases when both anticipated and unexpected events create an immediate need for imprinted promotional products. Sometimes a gift is required for visiting customers or VIP's, materials are needed for special recognition, or a reward is needed for some particular accomplishment. Perhaps, identity items are required for use at a training session or to enhance a picnic, open house or holiday party.

A peripheral advantage of using the company store as a source for all imprinted product requirements is that it is possible to control the accuracy and integrity of the company's imprints and logos. If all imprints are funneled through one central source, the company can be sure that they are properly reproduced and conform to company standards.

The key to an effective company store is the selection of imprinted products that will most effectively satisfy the demands of the people that will use it. The basic stock should consist of a diverse selection of wearables and products that are useful in a business environment.
